Renewable Energy & Savings Made Easy

Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs)

REC

A Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) is a certified document, representing proof that electricity was generated from a renewable source.

RECs are tradable, non-tangible byproducts of green energy, measured and priced by the amount of electricity they cover.

Consumers can purchase up to 100% of their electricity through RECs.

1 MWh

Each REC represents 1 megawatt-hour (MWh) of renewable electricity generated and delivered to the grid.

This unit makes it easy to track and measure the REC’s environmental and financial impact.

On average, 1 MWh of renewable energy avoids 0.4–0.9 metric tons of CO₂ emissions, depending on the regional grid mix.

Zero Emissions

The purchase of RECs allows organizations to claim zero emissions for that portion of electricity use, reducing reported Scope 2 emissions under the GHG Protocol market-based method.

Scope 2 emissions are indirect greenhouse gas emissions from the generation of electricity and account for a large share of an organization’s carbon footprint.

Online Access

RECs allow organizations to achieve a fully renewable energy profile without having to install renewable energy equipment onsite.

AUS clients can purchase RECs through a secure, user-friendly marketplace.

Our team brings decades of experience to help guide clients through REC purchasing.

Below are a variety of sustainability goals that inspire the acquisition of green power through RECs.

Here are some key aspects to consider when securing a
REC agreement.

Certification (such as State or federal, STAR ENERGY, Green-e, or similar) may be REQUIRD of your purchase.

This type of certification often is to help verify and ensure aspects like eligibility, proper inspection and verification through EPA-recognized organizations, the products marketing and quality assurance, and avoid RECs being double-counted and other potential setbacks.

  • Generation source refers to the specific type of renewable energy (such as wind, solar, hydroelectric, and geothermal) used to create the certificate.
  • Vintage refers to the year the renewable energy was generated.

Where and when the REC is generated can impact the value and eligibility of the certificate as well as potential marketing opportunities.

The amount of green power purchased can vary based on your procurement goal. Meaning you can choose whether you would like to purchase just a portion of your energy use, or if you want to cover your entire usage.

REC procurement can be combined with electric procurement for easy and convenient billing and delivery.
