In today’s AUSenergy News Update: Demand response could have saved Texas millions, American Electric Power closes 10 coal-fired plants, and New York funds seven energy storage projects.
Demand response could have saved Texas $200 million from 2012-2013
Summary: Had a small number of Texas consumers strategically reduced their power usage through a demand response program during just five days between 2012 and 2013, the state could have saved $200 million; according to new analysis from the South-central Partnership for Energy Efficiency as a Resource (SPEER).
AUS Comment: Given that this estimate is based on two rather mild weather years, it is easy to see how well a demand response program can work to save on energy usage and cost, with far greater savings expected during times of extreme weather. Why wouldn’t you do demand response, if possible?
American Electric Power stops generation at 10 coal-fired plants
Summary: American Electric Power confirmed Monday it has stopped generation at 10 coal-fired plants across five states planned for decommission this year.
Combined, the coal units in Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Virginia and West Virginia generated 5,588 MW, and all burned Central Appalachian or Northern Appalachian coal.
AUS Comment: Though we realize that the decline in coal production is negatively affecting those in the coal industry, moving from fossil fuel to more renewable sources is inevitable and necessary for our environment. Natural gas production is taking over for many of these plants – and although it is a cleaner fuel, it is still not a renewable resource. Time to put more money and drive into developing renewable energy and storage capabilities.
New York funds 7 energy storage projects for REV initiative
Summary: The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) will fund seven companies based inside the state to either scale up projects or demonstrate how energy storage can help transform the state’s electricity grid. The seven NYSERDA-backed projects will focus on technologies which can reduce the need for traditional fuels while creating a more energy-efficiency and renewables-friendly grid.
AUS Comment: We applaud Gov. Cuomo and his drive to boost innovation and investment in clean energy for NY. We particularly applaud the emphasis on battery technology to increase storage capabilities. “Under Governor Cuomo’s REV strategy, New York State is transforming the way electricity is distributed and used by consumers,” stated John Rhodes, NYSERDA President and CEO, “And energy storage will factor significantly into development of a resilient, affordable, clean energy system.”
