Since its first publication in 1818, the weather predictions in the Farmer’s Almanac have been accurate about 80% of the time. And so, according to the 2015 Farmer’s Almanac, there’s an 80% chance that this upcoming winter is going to produce “colder-than-normal and wetter-than-usual weather for three-quarters of the country east of the Rocky Mountains.”
Cold Hard Lessons
Remember the 2014 Polar Vortex? As 187 million people in the U.S. struggled to stay warm, natural gas demand soared to record levels, electric utilities were pushed to their limits and energy prices soared.
If someone told you that there was an 80% chance that the plane you were about to board would crash in mid-flight, would you still board it?
With an 80% chance of another record-breaking spike in natural gas demand resulting from cold winter temperatures, it may be in your best interest to lock in a percentage of your property’s energy use during the winter months or for an extended period of time.
Protect yourself by fixing all (or a portion) of your natural gas and electricity this winter while rates are low. Doing so will help to provide your facility with more price certainty as well as budget stability. A fixed price plan softens the impact of market volatility, providing your facility with the protection it needs, when you need it. Waiting too long and locking in at the last minute could mean higher prices.
