We are still receiving warnings about scammers in Texas, tricking customers into sharing their private information over the phone or email. The personal information obtained through these schemes opens residences up to the possibility of service interruptions, with no protection against dangerous summer temperatures.
Scammers may trick consumers by cold-calling them and claiming to work for the utility; saying they need to confirm account information to avoid service interruptions. Or they may tell customers that they’re qualified for a specially discounted rate. There have even been reports of door-to-door salespersons, disguising themselves as representatives of the utility or another supplier. They try to trick customers into showing them a copy of their utility bill. Unless you’ve initiated the visit, you’re better off not opening the door.
The Association of Electric Companies in Texas, Inc. (AECT) has also issued this press release advising consumers to avoid giving out any information such as utility bill account numbers, Social Security numbers, credit card numbers or bank account information to any unsolicited callers or E-mailers. Consumers should always call electric companies directly to verify their account status.
AECT will be doing some additional media outreach this week, as well as a good deal of social media activity, primarily via Twitter – twitter.com/aectnet. They will be using the following hashtags:
- #keepcustomerssafe
- #justhangup
- #protectyourpockets
Think you’ve been slammed? Be sure to file a complaint with your state’s Commerce Commission or Public Utility Commission, and/or your state’s Attorney General’s Office.
